Reinforcement of earlier learning leading on to a greater understanding of how to use a modern word processing system effectively.

At the end of the module the student should be able to:

  • Automate document formatting and layout
  • Apply style and macro commands to control the design and appearance of documents
  • Create tables and integrate with documents
  • Automate the creation of contents and index pages for documents
  • Integrate office applications and make effective use of mail merge

Desktop Publishing and Using Graphics (click to view details)

Level 1: 10 credits

This module aims to develop skills in the use of Desktop Publishing (DTP) systems and effective techniques in the use of graphics within office information systems.

At the end of the module the student should be able to:

  • Understand when to use DTP and when to use word processing
  • Analyse the planning and design criteria when creating a publication
  • Create effective publications in both media
  • Apply text and graphics appropriately
  • Analyse and apply different types of output

This module requires you to have a copy of Microsoft Publisher. Please note that this module is not suitable for Office 2000.

Investigation of some of the advanced features within modern presentation systems, students to develop skills in the production of advanced presentations.

At the end of the module the student should be able to:

  • Understand the functionality of the advanced features
  • Create a self-running presentation
  • Make effective use of external data within a presentation system
  • Output a presentation for distribution
  • Understand the special requirements for publishing presentations on the WWW

Development of the skills required to create a simple website using common page layout components.

At the end of the module the student should be able to:

  • Understand the different elements within web page construction and the principles of good design
  • Construct a simple web site using a What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) editor
  • Understand and apply the use of programming language to create web pages
  • Understand and apply the requirements for use of graphics within a website
  • Understand and apply the requirements for publishing a web site

Use of the electronic office systems. Developing an understanding of the more advanced features of computer operating environments including the control panel.

At the end of the module the student should be able to:

  • Understand how to personalise a computer and make the necessary changes with confidence
  • Make effective use of the control panel and programme manager
  • Understand and use the common diaries, appointments and synchronisation systems provided with Windows and Outlook

  • Research and identify the underlying issues of a chosen topic
  • Evaluate the issues within the chosen topic
  • Understand the implications of the convergence in technologies
  • Analyse the possible implications these issues may have on his or her organisation
  • Produce a structured report detailing the findings and conclusions
