Phase 1 compulsory modules

These modules are compulsory

We estimate that each module will take 20 hours to complete, but many people are completing the modules in less time.

All modules will now be worth 10 Level 1 credits, except for the first Phase 1 compulsary module, MTC001, which is worth 10 Level 0 credits.

MTC001 Basic Computing Skills & Electronic Communication Download sample

Foundation in the skills required to make effective use of modern business IT systems. It develops a basic understanding of a computer operating environment; and provides an introduction to electronic communication.

At the end of the module the student should be able to:

  • Understand and be able to make effective use of file management
  • Be comfortable in the use of file compression
  • Connect to the World Wide Web (WWW). Be able to move between different web sites and post messages on discussions forums
  • Download files from the WWW
  • Create an e-mail account, send and receive e-mails with and without attachments

 

MTC102 An Introduction to Word Processing Download sample
Level 1

An introduction to the use of a modern word-processor, including basic formatting and document design.

At the end of the module the student should be able to:

  • Understand and make successful use of menus, settings and options within word processing packages
  • Use the formatting tools to create documents that are effective, clear and easy to read

 

MTC103 Getting Started with Spreadsheets Download sample
Level 1
10 credits
Development of the initial skills required to make effective use of a modern business spreadsheet, and deal with numerical information within.

At the end of the module the student should be able to:

  • Understand the basic function of a spreadsheet
  • Create a spreadsheet, using correct numbering and formatting
  • Understand and apply basic formulae and functions
  • Produce and format data summaries using charts

 

MTC107 Outlook and The Internet Download sample
Level 1
10 credits
Introduction to the benefits of Outlook, providing a firm foundation in its use both as an e-mail client and as a day-to-day management tool. This module also covers the use of web browsers, and World Wide Web (WWW) search engines.

At the end of the module the student should be able to:

  • Undertake online research on a given topic
  • Understand and use search engines
  • Undertake advanced e-mailing, and manage messages
  • Manage contacts effectively
  • Organise and view tasks and notes
  • Analyse the need for and apply skills in using firewalls, anti-virus and anti-spy software
